Mixed martial arts are gaining a huge following in America, especially following the advent of Dana White’s UFC and the related reality show, Ultimate Fighter. Some industry professionals believe that MMA has already surpassed boxing in terms of popularity and there is no indication that trend will ever be reversed. The varied styles represented in MMA are often employed by the fighters in a mix-and-match method, and each fighter has his own specialties.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a style that works well for fighters who are most comfortable grappling. It focuses primarily on holds that force submissions from the fighter’s opponent in order to prevent torn ligaments, broken bones or loss of consciousness. Other fighters prefer to use more Americanized styles such as boxing and wrestling. On the other side of the fence are those athletes who practice an Eastern combat art such as Muay Thai, or kick-boxing. Personal style is also a big component of MMA. Its competitors often employ specific techniques such as trying to force the opponent into a defensive mode, or attempting to limit the opponent’s techniques by employing take-downs and grappling holds.

As MMA grows in popularity, more and more styles are making their way to the forefront of the sport. The very concept of mixed martial arts fighting allows for a great deal of creativity, both for fighters and trainers. By broadcasting most of their more important matches on pay-per-view television, the sport gains exclusivity and generates a great deal of revenue. Offering lesser matches and replays of previous fights on cable television channels help to spread the fan base.

The NFL Lockout Issue

April 7, 2011 By admin Leave a Comment

The NFL collective bargaining agreement is the contract by which both parties operate. It’s a contract that decides how the money from NFL endeavors, such as advertising and television rights, gets split between the owners who have control of the team, and the players who perform on the field.

Recently the NFL labor agreement has become a source of tension between both sides. The reason being is that the NFL has increased in popularity over the last decade to the point where the money that is coming in is nearly double what it was. That excess of money can cause either side to seek additional compensation.

The players union gets roughly 54 percent of the money generated. This is also a split number. The owners get 44 percent, but it’s after they take $1 billion right off the top for the expense to operate the team. The owners have been calling for a larger portion of the money off the top. They want the increase doubled but have denied requests for the players to see their full financial statements.

The labor agreement has it’s biggest hurdle in the court of public opinion. In other sports the fans tend to side with the players seeing as how their money is so plentiful while their risk and longevity is so minimal. Their money is viewed as the perk, like an online casino bonus. But football’s risk allows the fans to side with the players.

The NFL CBA is always a dangerous topic and it threatens football for everyone. As football gains in popularity you can expect that their disagreements will continue.

Importance of the Right Triathlon Equipment

January 24, 2011 By admin Leave a Comment

Triathlons are often said to be one of the ultimate tests of physical endurance and fitness as participants bike, swim, and run for miles with very little rest between each leg.

To succeed in a triathlon, it’s essential to train and prepare so your body is physically fit and ready to take on the events of the triathlon. Just as important as training, however, is the proper equipment. State of the art equipment and apparel can give you an edge over the competition and help you get on top. With the right equipment, you can swim, bike, and run faster.

If you are unsure of what equipment you need, a triathlon store can steer you in the right direction. The associates are knowledgeable about various types of equipment, and many are seasoned triathletes themselves. The triathlon store should be able to provide recommendations on the following types of equipment:

  • Shoes – Many triathlon participants swear by ZOOT Triathlon footwear, and numerous professional triathletes wear these shoes. Your triathlon store will probably recommend them. ZOOT footwear is ideal for triathlons because it is lightweight and comfortable, allowing you to run quickly for long distances.
  • Swimwear – A neoprene wetsuit is your best bet. Not only will it keep you warmer in the water, but the neoprene is slicker than your skin, so you glide through the water faster. It helps you remain buoyant, too, which also increases speed.
  • Hydration Systems – These are a triathlon must-have. A lightweight hydration system will keep you properly hydrated throughout the races so you don’t slow down or, even worse, pass out from dehydration.

These are just a few types of equipment you will need for your triathlon. Once you find a triathlon store, they can assist you in finding the perfect ZOOT footwear, swimwear, bicycles, apparel, and everything else you need to stay on top.

What You Need to Know about Becoming a Professional Athlete

December 31, 2010 By admin Leave a Comment

It seems like it’s every little boy or gir’s dream to become a professional athlete. And what’s not to dream about? Traveling around the world, making lots of money, being admired by old and young everywhere, and of course, the money. But it takes much more than a dream and a desire to be a professional athlete. If you think you’ve got what it takes to make it in the pros, check out these tips.

1. Find your passion. You can’t be an expert in everything. If you like to play basketball and baseball, decide which sport you like best and stick with it. You’ll need a lot of dedication and practice to make it in the big leagues, so sticking to just one sport will give you the chance to really improve your sport.

2. Be physically fit. Again, becoming a professional athlete does not come by just wishing it. You have to work out and be physically fit in order to be successful. Every athlete in the world works out, eats right, and takes care of their body. When your body is in top physical shape, you’ll be able to push it to its limits and really excel.

3. Have a realistic attitude. If you get too caught up in making it big, you may actually miss the good times you can have playing sports. Don’t let your dream of being a professional athlete get in the way of actually loving the sport. If you take it too seriously, you’ll end up not liking the hours and hours you’ll have to play in order to get really good.

4. Set goals. Any successful person, in sports or in business, sets goals. Set your goals small at first, such as getting strong enough to run a mile, and then set bigger goals. You need goals in order to succeed.

Follow these simple steps and you may find yourself playing sports professionally one day.

Is it your dream to become the next Derek Jeter? If you have a dream to become a professional baseball player, then you know there’s a lot of work ahead of you. You can’t just wake up one morning and decide you’re going to be a baseball player. You have to practice, keep in shape, and most importantly, you have to have some talent. If you think you want to play in the big leagues and become a professional baseball player, ask yourself these questions before you set out to work on your dream.

1. Do you have talent? No matter how much you want something, if you don’t have any natural talent, it may be a lost case. You could still work towards your dream if you don’t have any talent; it’s just going to be a lot harder.

2. Are you prepared to work? There’s no doubt about it. Becoming a professional baseball player will take work – a lot of it. You’ll have to practice, even on the weekends and give up hanging out with friends.

3. Do you eat right? Part of being a professional baseball player is being healthy. That means eating right and exercising. Sure, that Twinkie might look good, but if you are serious about becoming an athlete, you better put the Twinkie down and pick up an apple instead.

4. Are you realistic? Most professional baseball players don’t end up signing with the Yankees or the Giants their first year. In fact, many baseball players never make it out of the minor leagues. If you want to play ball, be sure that you have realistic expectations.

Now, it’s time to get out there and start playing ball! Nobody ever got to their dream of being a professional baseball player by sitting around thinking about it. Start practicing and you could be in the big leagues before long.
